The Ministry of Health of Ukraine, together with partners, continues to work on strengthening medical facilities with energy equipment. This will ensure the smooth operation of hospitals in the event of emergency power outages and in the face of daily shelling and attacks by Russia on the energy system of Ukraine.
In total, Ukrainian hospitals are equipped with 11,820 generators for uninterrupted power supply. Also, about 90 Ukrainian healthcare institutions have solar stations, most of which have batteries. They are established at the expense of various programs, charitable foundations, governments of other countries, etc. In general, by the end of the year, it is planned to equip 200 health care institutions with solar stations.
Only this year in many regions of Ukraine continued to equip hospitals with energy equipment at the expense of local budgets and with the help of charitable foundations.
Among the examples of such successful cooperation is a solar power plant with a capacity of 80 kW, which was installed in the Nizhyn city maternity hospital. The equipment works together with batteries that store electricity. The cost of a solar power plant is more than 4.3 million hryvnia. The project was implemented by the CF “Yellowblue Force Foundation” with the support of the Ministry of Health of здоровʼя of Ukraine, in cooperation with the NGO “Ecoclub” with the financial support of the Pfizer Foundation (in cooperation with the Leleka Foundation).
In the Brovary multidisciplinary clinical hospital in the Kyiv region, a solar power plant with a capacity of 24 kW is installed. The equipment works together with the backup power system, which is 28.8 kW. The project was implemented thanks to the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health, CF “RePower Ukraine,” companies “SMA Solar Technology AG,” “SolarPower Europe,” “Solar Support Ukraine” and local authorities.
Also this year, on the building of the polyclinic and therapeutic departments of the Boryslav Central City Hospital, in the Lviv region, a hybrid solar station was installed along with energy conservation systems. The total power of the station is 30 kW.
Another 178 solar panels were installed on the main building of the Kryvyi Rih City Hospital No. 16 in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The total capacity of the solar station system is 40 kW.
Solar power plants were installed in three more medical institutions of Vinnytsia region. We are talking about the Mother and Child Center, Vinnitsa City Clinical Hospital No. 1 and Vinnitsa City Clinical Hospital No. 3. The total capacity of each station is 60 kW.
Also, the implementation of the joint project of the Ministry of здоровʼя Protection, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the European Commission “Ray of Hope” continues. Within the project, Ukraine received 5876 solar panels. Currently, the first 20 здоровʼя protection institutions are already being examined to determine the possibility of further installation and design of solar stations.
Preparations are underway for the implementation of another joint project of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the World Bank “Strengthening the health care system and preserving life” (HEAL Ukraine). Within the framework of the project, photovoltaic power plants will be inserted in 130 primary medical care institutions in different regions of Ukraine. Now the procedure for preparing hospitals for their installation is underway.
It should be noted that thanks to energy equipment, patients will receive medical services regardless of emergency or planned power outages, which will guarantee greater energy security of the institution and its stable operation.
Also, the installation of solar power equipment will allow medical institutions to use solar energy as a power source and accumulate it. This will significantly save energy costs and direct these funds to other needs of medical institutions.
In accordance with the amendments to the Law of Ukraine on the restoration and green transformation of the energy system of Ukraine, medical institutions will be able to implement the mechanism of an active consumer of electricity.
Hospitals produce electricity for their own needs. However, now in the hours when more electricity will be generated than consumed, its excess can be sold to the network. According to approximate estimates, this will enable hospitals to save about 5-10% of funds.
Strengthening of Ukrainian hospitals will continue to strengthen the stability of institutions and their energy independence despite the challenges of a full-scale war.
