The hardest winter is behind us, and more warmth and light are ahead. However, this does not mean that generators are no longer needed. As long as the war continues, repeated attacks on energy facilities are possible.
Our “Light to Hospitals” team delivers generators of varying capacities to hospitals and helps with technical issues. Guided by our experience, we are happy to share tips on how to prolong the life of your generator.
1. Use the generator at 50-70% capacity
This is the “price-longevity” balance. For example, a 2-kW generator should be used at 1.5 kW on average. At the maximum capacity, it can work for several minutes.
2. Turn on the devices one by one
An electric stove, a kettle, a vacuum cleaner, a hair dryer, a washing machine, a boiler – it is better to use them taking turns (if you have a 3-5 kW generator). 1.5-2 kW generators are not designed for these devices.
3. Consider how long the generator is on
Frequent switching on and off wears out the engine faster. Use the generator for 30 minutes or more. Do this periodically: the system will rust if the generator is not switched on at all.
4. Ensure maintenance of the generator
Choose high-quality fuel, change the engine oil, and the air filter on time. Do this twice as often if the generator is running close to its maximum capacity, is switched on often, and when there is a lot of dust around.
5. Ensure safety
First, disconnect the accommodation from the external power grid, then turn on the generator. After using the generator, do the opposite: turn off the generator, and connect to the grid. Otherwise, there is a significant danger of a short circuit and fire.
There is no standard for the life cycle of the generator, it is the balance of its workload and maintenance.
