At the end of March, we delivered a diesel generator to the Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in Kyiv. Children and pregnant women (meaning that children are treated while still in the womb) from all over Ukraine receive care here. In particular, this includes children and women from the front-line areas and those who were under occupation. At this medical institution, surgeries are done for children with congenital heart defects from the first days of life.
The generator was supplied with funds from Finnish donors and is currently the largest in the “Light to Hospitals” project – with a capacity of 53 kW and a weight of 1,250 kg.
Our friends from Finland who represented a number of Finnish companies and organizations that joined the fundraising initiative came to the medical centre with us to speak with the doctors. In addition to the generator, they brought sweets for the children.
We talked with the employees and the medical director of the Centre Andriy Maksymenko. He described how the Centre operated between February and March 2022, when the medical team basically lived in the Centre for over a month. He spoke about the current needs and about the children who receive care – in particular, the ones with the most complex disabilities. He personally conducted the operation which we later attended and observed on the monitors from a special room.
