Q&A: How we help with osteosynthesis implants
During the full-scale russian aggression in Ukraine, the number of civilians and military personnel who received limb injuries with complex bone damage is growing rapidly. Treatment for such injuries in many cases requires osteosynthesis implants. With the support of AstraZeneca, we took this task upon ourselves.

🟨🟦

Metal osteosynthesis is a surgical technique that is used in cases of complex fractures to repair damaged bone fragments with the help of various repairing apparatus. Special surgical implants (rods and plates) repair bone fragments and help restore the union of the bones and, over time, allow patients to return to normal life. Implants are used for complex injuries and fractures, which require surgery to heal. For example, when bone fragments can damage adjacent tissues, for improperly healed fractures, for fractures with secondary displacement of fragments, or which slowly consolidate with long-term bone healing.

🟦🟨 Who can get help?

Civilians and military personnel who received complex bone injuries of the limbs because of russia’s war against Ukraine. Assistance will be provided to those citizens of Ukraine who were injured during hostilities, in mine explosions, missile attacks, etc.

Doctors will order implants for each patient, considering individual anatomy and trauma.

🟦🟨 How much does it cost?

The implants are free of charge for the patients.

🟦🟨 Where in Ukraine is this surgery provided?

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine together and the Foundation chose three pilot hospitals:

  1. Cherkasy Regional Hospital (Trauma Department – 3 Mendelieieva St.).
  2. Uzhhorod City Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital (Trauma Service – 71 Mynayska St.).
  3. Vinnytsia Pyrohov Regional Clinical Hospital (Trauma Service – 46 Pyrohova Street).

These hospitals have experience in the use of metal osteosynthesis technology and the necessary equipment. We also plan to involve additional hospitals.

🟦🟨 Who implements the project?

The charity project is implemented by our international volunteer organization

Yellowblue Force Foundation together with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine with the support of the global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

🟦🟨 What is the budget of the project?

The budget of the pilot project is $250,000. It was 100% funded by AstraZeneca.

🟦🟨 Who supplies the implants?

The supplier is a European manufacturer, which we selected following a rigorous tender procedure. The implants are certified in Ukraine and in European countries. The manufacturer has an official dealer representative in Ukraine who supplies the implants to hospitals and provides professional support and training for doctors.

🟦🟨 How to get help?

We can provide implants of internal fixation for patients at these three hospitals who have the injuries mentioned above and suffered because of the russian invasion. Currently, we cannot provide implants to people with household or sports injuries, or at other medical facilities.

Please contact these hospitals for treatment. If you or your relatives are a patient at one of them or have questions about the program, send us an email at implants@yellowblue.foundation.
